POLICY

Alder Conklin is a deeply-rooted, progressive community leader with a vision for a healthy community with equity & justice, high quality affordable housing, environmental justice, & safety for all.

As a community activist, mother, and 1st generation college graduate, she has experienced firsthand the issues that need tackling in this district and she is using her skills to bring change on the Common Council.

My thoughts on the Sauk Creek Greenway

The Sauk Creek Greenway is a complex project that was recently passed unanimously by the Madison Common Council. As Alder, I incorporated constituent feedback into the plan, added more input meetings, and works collaboratively with constituents and city staff. City staff and I have held six public information meetings, four focus groups, three open houses, two public walk throughs, and sent almost 29,000 postcards to area residents.

Like many of my constituents, I want to do everything I can to preserve as many trees as possible in our district. I serve on the Sustainable Madison Committee and I understand the importance of having a thriving urban tree canopy. Trees provide homes for wildlife, help reduce air pollution, and give us a connection to nature. There has been misinformation going around that I support taking out 5,000 trees and that is false. I do support removing invasive species but will work to protect any healthy trees. The way things are currently going in Sauk Creek, all of the oaks will die off because the invasive buckthorn and honeysuckle are taking over. A healthy oak woodland is better for wildlife and will help keep our water clean and prevent erosion. I support a restoration project that helps preserve mature trees, attracts more diverse wildlife, and provides a habitat for pollinators. I look forward to continuing to hear from and work with my constituents and City staff on this project.

Safety for All

As Alder, she has supported the CARES program since it’s conception in 2021. Since then, CARES has answered 7,787 calls with only 2% needing law enforcement. She will work to increase the program to 24/7.
